Acland Burghley School

Two new school buildings which link together the existing 1960s Brutalist school by HPKA, and 1980’s sports facilities and provide new sports and performing arts facilities, built in 2 phases.

Phase 1 is a sports centre reception and changing room building linking the existing sports hall with a new performing arts building via a new bridge, with all weather pitches forming part of the works.

Phase 2 is a 2 storey performing arts building with dance studios and music department which is able to operate as a standalone building for extended use with access from the west end of the site.

The dance/drama studios sit behind a glazed facade on the upper level, looking back over the school site and open up to form a single multi-purpose hall for performances, events and exams.

Both buildings use a lightweight palette of cementitious cladding and glazing in contrast to the substantial mass of the existing concrete clad building.
