Castle Way 1

A residential scheme for a sensitive historic site in Southampton which sits within the old city walls and overlooks the new Watermark Development by ACME for Hammerson. The site was being used as a car park and the intention was to bring a more active use to this neglected corner by introducing a cafe restaurant at ground level and forming a new pocket park inside the old walls.

The residential component, comprising of duplex units on the first and second floors and apartments on the third, forms a simple block clad in bronze panels reflecting the then vertical rhythm of the Watermark scheme. The latest Masterplan now proposes the entire site is developed as a small park – perhaps a more appropriate response to this key site and the approach that was adopted in the second phase of this design.
